Coloring Grass with Pencils by Faye
by Kristy on June 23, 2012

Morning Oddies :)

I hope you’re enjoying Funday so far? Stick wih us because there’s absolutely loads planned.

I’ve been loving my pencils a lot lately. I can achieve things with them that I’m not even close to doing with a Copic! Strangely, I find it easier to try things in pencil, and then I carry it over. Anyway, enough waffle!

Recently, I was asked which are the best pencils? How long is a piece of string? I have a selection from each, mainly because I’m a fickle magpie, but also because I like the different lead textures. Want to spread colour and blend without too much effort? Soft Koh-i-Nors. Want to create more definition? Then I go for the harder Prismas and Polychromos.

So, grass… Normally I would colour the grass last, but I thought it might be easier to see just the grass, so I’ve coloured the image twice, which is why, when you get to the end, the grass will look different!

To start, I’ve laid down some brown; around the edge of Mae’s dress and on either side of her. Next I went over the brown and the basic grass area with a light lime green.

Now, with a slightly darker green, I’ve started adding little flicks of colour to mimic the blades of grass.

This time I’ve used a pine green shade in little ‘v’ flicks, more of this colour around the back and right side of Mae, because obviously it’s darker there.

Finally I’m on my darkest green, in single flicks, making sure I have no white showing through. I’ve also added some very random, black strokes, again, more on the right side, just to add some extra depth and texture. Job done!

I’m heading back to the Odd Facebook Page now, I hope you’ll join us. Keep your eyes peeled as there are more Tutorials later today and who knows what other fun!!
