Hiya crafty peeps- Katie here with you today to share a little tutorial on how to make box envelopes! I’ve made quite a few SOG makes in my time and one of the things I love to do is pile on some embellishments- but that can pose a problem when you try to then fit it into a standard envelope. So I’ve been making my own envelopes for a few years now which lets me put as much pretty on a card as I want without worrying about how it’s going to fit.
Since I’ve seen a bunch of your creative makes as well, and know that lots of you must be in the same boat, I thought I’d share in hopes you’d find it helpful…so let’s get started!
First there are a few things you’ll need…
Once we’ve got our supplies in hand we can start with the making! You’ll see I keep a small piece of paper with some dimensions on it for the most standard envelope sizes I make- 6×6. To make a traditional envelope you need a paper sized 10×10 and you score once at 3 3/4; for a skinnier box envelope paper sized 10.5×10.5 and score twice at 4 and 4 1/4; for deep box envelopes paper sized 11×11 and score twice at 4 and 4 1/2. We’ll be making a deep box envelope in this tutorial so we start by trimming the paper…
Then we’ll make our two score lines with the envelope corner guide on our scoreboard- do this on each side of your paper, so a total of four sets of two lines…
Once our lines are scored we’re going to cut the large triangle out of each side- I’ve highlighted the lines you cut in pink and the other lines you’ll see in yellow to try and make it easier…
And here’s what it looks like with all the cuts done…
Okay, now we’re all set to fold all of our lines- I usually do the inside first and then the outside but I’m not sure it matters, in fact I’m pretty sure it’s just habit, lol…
Ok, almost home free- now we just need to stick down our sides! I use an adhesive tape along the edges of the bottom flap and one piece on the inner two to tack them together. I’ve found it’s a little easier to attach the two sides in the center and then pull up the bottom flap over them. It can take a little practice but once you’ve done it a couple times it’s easy peasy…
Once you’ve got everything adhered you’re done! An optional step is to use a corner rounder on the top flap- it gives it a nice polished look- and to decorate the envelope to coordinate with the card. And now you’ve got plenty of room for those cards with lots of layers, flowers or popped up images and embellishments!
I hope that you’ve found this helpful! If you try one don’t forget to stop on by the SOG Community Facebook page and give us a peek- we love to see what you create. And speaking of creating there’s still plenty of time to join in with our challenge this month- it’s a fun one if you like bling because we want to see your *gold*! Last but not least, if you’ve not signed up for the newsletter yet please do, you don’t want to miss out and it gives you the inside scoop 🙂 Hope everyone has a fabulous day!

What a smarty pants!!! Pretty much every card I make requires more room than what a normal envelope will allow! Great tut!!
